Rookie of the Year has become known for a heavy touring schedule and upbeat electric shows, giving them the reputation of one of the hardest working bands. Their strategy is to reach people with their music one city and show at a time, and it seems to be working.
This indie pop-rock band began in 2002 as front man and vocalist, Ryan Dunson’s solo project. Shortly after starting his project, in late 2002 he was signed with Vice Verse Virtue Records, a small record label located in Tennessee. Soon after he signed with One Eleven Records, releasing a 1000-copy EP titled “Late Night Makeout.”
Over the past three years Ryan’s project evolved into a collaborative effort with the addition of guitarist and vocalist Mike Kamerman and bassist Pat Murphy. In 2004 the band released the band’s debut album “Having to Let Go,” a 13-track LP. They released their second album “The Goodnight Moon” in 2006.
After the release of “The Goodnight Moon” they went on the Van’s Warped Tour as well as playing at the Bamboozle Festival in New Jersey year after year. They also toured with bands like, Mae, My American Heart, The Rocket Summer, Cute is What We Aim For, Meg and Dia, Secondhand Serenade, Copeland, Mute Math, Mest, The Spill Canvas, and many others.
They have rightfully earned their reputation, and after touring for quite some time they finally settled down to record their third album. They released “Sweet Attention” on August 5, 2008, which reached number 21 on the US Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and number 9 on the Billboard’s Alternative New Artist Chart.
With over 7 million plays on their Myspace page (www.myspace.com/rookieoftheyear) Rookie of the Year is just steps away from breaking out and making it big. Set to play this year’s Bamboozle Festival in New Jersey on May 3, they are currently headlining the “What is Love Tour,” featuring Jet Lag Gemini, School Boy Humor, and Kiernan McMullan. The tour will make it to the Webster Underground on April 26th, 2009.
