When I first wrote back in early 2009 that Thriving Ivory’s lead vocalist Clayton Stroope was “Axl Rose in disguise...” I had a theory that he was Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) mixed with the legendary ‘Roses frontman. This was never mad to be a negative but instead a singer embracing his inner rock star. With one of the 2008/2009’s biggest singles “Angels on the Moon,” helping to propel the band forward they now hope to build on that success.
Interestingly enough when it came to writing something that resembled a biography about Thriving Ivory I found that there wasn’t much there. The band that released an independent album in 2003 didn’t have any success in the industry until the 2008 and the re-release of the self titled independent album.
Stemming from San Francisco the five piece band signed with Wind Up Records in 2007 and worked with Howard Benson who produced other rock artists such as Daughtry and Seether. “There are some things that take an adjustment. On one hand it’s such a relief to not have to worry about running the website and updating that, not having to borrow money from our parents...but at times you miss the independence of being able to make a call on your own,” said Clayton on signing with Wind Up.
After surfing the web for a few minutes I found people drawing comparisons with everyone from the Foo Fighters, to U2, Guns N’ Roses to U2. Clearly the rock and roll gods are smiling down on Thriving Ivory who have not announced plans for a new album but instead are playing all across the country during the summer to help promote “Thriving Ivory,” the album.
Thriving Ivory are set to roll into Hartford in all their glory on July 15th for a show that I have been anticipating for quite a few weeks. Hope to see you there.
